History of Donald Holm Construction in Duluth, MN
Holm Construction, unofficially established in 1954 and later officially incorporated as Donald Holm Construction Co., Inc. in 1972, has served the Duluth Minnesota area for more than 60 years. Donald Holm actually began his career in the 1940s working for his grandfather, Otto Holm, a partner with Klippen and Holm Construction Company. While he hammered nails and learned the construction trade, his grandfather instilled the core values that remain at the heart of the company today: family, honesty, integrity, and the value of a job done right.
As business grew quickly in the Duluth Area, Donald Holm
landed one of its first major jobs -- the Chester Bowl Recreation Center Chalet.
In 1985, Don sold his company to his three sons Dean, Duane, and Dan, marking the fourth generation in the family business. As the times change, the Holm core values remain. Each brother supervises their projects from the bidding process through final completion to ensure their workmanship achieves the highest possible quality. Their personal hands-on approach has earned them the position as one the area’s leading general contractors.
Dean D. Holm, President
The oldest of the Holm brothers began his career working out in the field for his father, finishing concrete, running carpentry crews, and estimating projects after hours. His experience in the field served him well as he committed to full-time estimating and project management.
Duane R. Holm, Vice President
As a teenager, Duane began his career early on, assisting his father in the summer months as a laborer on various jobs cleaning up and pulling nails from salvaged lumber. As high school transitioned into college, Duane continued to labor during the day while perfecting his project estimating skills after hours.
Daniel A. Holm, Secretary/Treasurer
Like his older brothers, Dan followed in their footsteps laboring during the summer months. After high school, Dan attended Mankato State University and acquired a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management which continues to compliment his past experience from the field.
Long-time clients appreciate the brothers’ straightforward personalities and unwavering commitment, which has led to strong relationships and years of repeat business.
In the early 2000s, each of Dean, Duane, and Dan’s sons followed the family tradition and began working for their fathers during the summer. Whether mowing lawns, cleaning up the construction yard, or picking up debris on a jobsite, they quickly earned roles that required more responsibility.
Today the fifth generation now holds a stake in their family’s construction business. Duane’s oldest son, Max, started out learning the trade as a carpenter and has transitioned into a supervisory role running crews on a daily basis and estimating jobs on way to becoming an equal partner in the business.
Duane’s youngest son, Ryker, works as a laborer shouldering the responsibility of coordinating crews while supplying them with necessary tools and materials.
